the space between / Happy Thanksgiving

Proverbs 18:24 A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Cars shrunk the country. Instead horses walking coast to coast in a matter of months, cars now roll long miles in days. Planes shrink it even more. In a single weekend, we visited friends and family in SC, VA, PA and NJ.

As we rose above snowy rolling hills in western PA it struck me that some friends truly validate Proverbs 18:24 – not in that they are closer than our wonderful family, but that no matter how many years gather between our embraces, in their presence there is suddenly no space between our hearts. Conversations pick up with all the intimacy they had when we last broke bread together. Photographs, concerns and victories flow together here where love and laughter mingle.

We don’t know when we will visit our friends again but what encouraging warmth glows inside us as we give thanks for such amazing friendships this season. And we thank God even more for a loving family with whom to gather around the turkey-laden table tomorrow. We wish you all the happiest of Thanksgivings filled with the love of family and friends.
